Rowan Companies (NYSE : RDC) is a global provider of offshore drilling services, with nearly 3,500 employees, four ultra-deepwater drillships, and 25 jack-up rigs.

The Goal

Rowan runs an innovative leadership initiative known as STRIVE, with the goal of total leadership development across numerous core competencies. The STRIVE team chose Talented to enhance learning reinforcement and skill transfer via last mile practice and coaching.

The Solution

Rowan worked with Talented to develop custom, true-to-life scenarios in which team managers apply situational leadership skills. Throughout the micro-course, players were asked to diagnose development levels, select an appropriate leadership style and implement a plan to appropriately develop a fictional colleague’s skills.

Talented infused the micro-course scenarios with automated coaching to give players feedback and help establish a relationship with their real-life coaches.


Halfway through the pilot, Hurricane Harvey hit Houston. As the city flooded, Rowan employees played the Learn-A-Thon style micro-course, raising money for Direct Relief as they progressed.

  • The average participant demonstrated one full level of improvement in their situational leadership abilities after just under 40 minutes of practice time.
  • 100% of team members reported learning something new or achieving a higher level of success.
  • 100% of team members reported high to very high engagement.

Even though some learners were without electricity, 88% of all challenges were completed, and nearly $1,000 was raised in less than 15 hours of team learning.
